Portable Game Goodness

I already mentioned in a previous post Yesterday about my recent digital purchase of Pokemon Red version originally for the Gameboy Colour portable gaming system. Ever since I was a kid I was always fascinated with having portable games and even to this day (at the very moment in fact as I am away from home for the weekend) I have always enjoyed good portable game. It's always great to be able to simply turn on a portable gaming console and play through entire adventures on such a tiny screen while you carry it around in your pocket.

I have always been particularly fond of the Nintendo line of portable consoles. Ever since the days of the Gameboy I have always had the latest little console produced by the big N and with good reason, they make fantastic games for them. Growing up I would spend hours a day either at home or when away from home on long car journeys getting engrossed in the tiny portable worlds. Pokemon in particular has always stood out to me as one of my favourite gaming franchises to this very day. The idea of battling and capturing literally hundreds of different kinds of Pokemon to train and befriend to become the ultimate trainer with the strongest Pokemon was always a fun adventure. When Pokemon first came out its popularity was out of this world.

The appeal of the games not only being capable of providing fun strategic adventures within the game world but also being able to carry your team of Pokemon with you everywhere you go. I remember kids everywhere bringing their gameboys to school, parks or friends houses to show off their teams of Pokemon, battle one anothet to prove who was better and trade Pokemon between games to complete your collection. The games would not nearly have became as popular if players were not able to carry around the games and consoles to play them on so easily.

Nowadays Nintendo is still dominating the portable gaming market with its DS and 3DS systems. The newer systems better hardware allow for even more detailed and bigger experiences whilst the dual screen foldable design allows them the extra space for hardware while still being portable by being foldable.

Portable gaming however isn't exclusive to consoles anymore. With the popularity and improving technology of smartphones, more and more people are enjoying mobile games that help pass the time. Smartphones already serve the purpose as a communication device with camera's, access to the internet and now a rising video game market. While many smartphone games are perhaps not as in depth or complex as a dedicated consile game there is no denying their popularity and convenience. Now it's time to get back to killing time with some more portable games while I enjoy my weekend away.
