Each character has unique
abilities in combat |
So yesterday I posted about a little free RPG game called InflationRPG, a very simple but addictive experience that has no restrictions to how long you can play and has no microtransactions whatsoever, which is very rare for an F2P game. Today I'm going to talk about another F2P RPG game that I've invested a ton of hours into. Now this game does have microtransactions but what makes it great is that you...honestly don't need to pay a thing at all. Like it doesn't twist your arm into paying, and that game is Brave Frontier.
Brave Frontier is an RPG game for Android and IOS that has the player character as a legendary Summoner who must stop a great evil using their powers to Summon forth the fallen warriors of old as part of your squad of up to 5 units. The player must choose a party of 5 from various characters they can capture, summon or earn through doing special trials and missions within the game and use that party to fight in wave like missions of enemies in order to progress through the game towards challenging bosses and advance the story. Yes, there is actually a story to this game and it's...surprisingly good. Despite the Summoner themselves not having a face or name, the game does feature a host of different regular NPC characters each with their own interesting personalities, motivations and fighting styles.

Hatsune Miku is one of the Promotional Units
you can unlock |
Gameplay consists of turn based combat where the player can select different actions for their party to try and take down the enemy. Timing your party's attacks to hit simultaneously or trigger specific buff's can greatly increase your damage so there is indeed a decent interactive element to the combat. Available to the player are multiple different kinds of battle format. There's your standard story missions where you must battle your way through an area, defeat a powerful boss and be rewarded with rare items and units before progressing to the next. Battles require "Energy" which refills over time. Normally in games like these this can mean waiting around for hours on end all the time just to have a chance at one battle, but the game does have a built in feature whereby if the player levels up as a Summoner their energy refill's automatically, so you can actually have incredibly long sessions of plowing through missions and levelling up to refill energy to keep playing. As the player levels up they gain access to other modes in the game and can start adding more and more powerful party members to their Squad. Other modes include an Arena mode where your squad will face off against an NPC version of another players squad in order to rank up on leaderboards. Raid, which is a mode you unlock at a later level where players can party up with other players around the world in order to tackle missions where they must defeat an incredibly difficult boss in a collaborative effort or help spread their manpower to different areas on a map in order to meet certain mission conditions. Even better is Arena and Raid don't actually use up energy like other missions do, they instead use separate orbs that refill at a separate rate. This means you can spend time doing other game modes to entertain you and unlock special items and units whilst waiting on your main energy to refill. This as well as special weekly dungeons and events that allow you the chance to earn rarer items or special promotional units (There is actually a promotional one on right now where you can unlock the Vocaloid character Hatsune Miku as a unit for your squad!)

Miku when fully evolved |
Party members consist of various characters you can either earn in game or randomly summon from the Summon gate. The characters you can obtain all have crazy designs that become even more crazy as you evolve them. Similar to Pokemon, when you level up a certain party member high enough and have the proper evolution materials you can evolve them into a more powerful form thus making your squad stronger. Each unit has their own set of stats, different element types, abilities and super moves that make them have different roles within the game and building your squad to have a balance of offence, defence and healing can be quite engaging, especially for some of the special challenge missions that may require you to win under certain conditions like only using Fire element units or win within 3 turns or something.
The Summon gate I mentioned earlier requires an in game item known as "Gems" which act as a sort of all purpose tool for refilling things like energy or Arena orbs required for battle or giving yourself another chance in a fight if your party is defeated and you don't want to start the mission from the beginning and while you CAN purchase Gems for real world money the game is actually very generous at allowing you means of obtaining Gems. Complete an area's missions? Get a Gem. Complete a special dungeon? Get a Gem. Log in to the game several days in a row? Get a Gem. Reach a high rank in Arena? Get a Gem. I've honestly never played a F2P game with as much content as this that DOESN'T try to rip you off or force you into spending money.
Having plenty of earned in game Gems or maybe some paid for Gems can make the experience a lot more fun. As a huge fan of games like Pokemon where forming a party from strong units you have trained is quite rewarding and having that sort of luck based factor to the Summon Gate where you don't know what kind of unit you may get can be quite exciting. Sure you may get frustrated if you get a duplicate unit you already have or a rather common unit who's not that strong but when you do pull the sought after powerful units it is very enjoyable. Even more so when you train and evolve those same units into even stronger more over the top forms. If you're looking for a free charming little RPG game with plenty of content, a design that doesn't force you to spend money on it to enjoy it, great soundtrack and some very interesting character designs and a fair amount of difficult optional challenges then I do recommend checking it out. There's still a lot of assets to the game I haven't even covered in this post so there is still plenty of stuff to find out and see for yourselves.
